Small Business Owners Pay Too Much For Health Insurance

There’s a               huge misconception out there that if you own a business, you get a better deal on health insurance. The fact is, many “group” health insurance plans come with higher price tags than individual health policies.

For the small business owner with 5-7 employees or less, offering to reimburse employees for their individual health insurance policies through an  (Health Reimbursement Arrangement) can prove a significant cost savings to the business, while giving more freedom of health insurance plan choice to their employees.

In addition, the employees ‘own’ their individual plans, which means there’s no need for COBRA coverage if they leave their current employer. Since businesses smaller than 20 employees do not offer COBRA coverage anyway, individual plans become even more attractive.

The biggest advantage of individual health plans over small group plans is price. Individual health plans typically offer lower premiums than similar group plans. The reason is risk. Individual health insurance in Washington State requires a health risk questionnaire be completed as part of the application process. The purpose of the health questionnaire is to ‘weed out’ the higher risk applicants with significant health risks.

Most people pass the questionnaire with ease. When they do, they fall into the same group as everyone else who also passed the same questionnaire, which represents a lower ‘risk’ to the insurance company, thus lowering rates. (Those who do not pass the health questionnaire are provided the opportunity to sign up on the Washington State Health Insurance Pool, a high-risk pool with significantly higher premiums) If a business has an employee who does not pass the health questionnaire, then it can still prove less expensive to cover the high risk pool premium for that individual employee versus paying higher group rates for all employees.

Group plans in Washington do not have a health questionnaire, so the insurance company has no way of ‘weeding out’ the unhealthy employees. The rates have a ‘built in’ risk factor, whether warranted or not, because the insurer has no way of separating the high risk groups from the low risk. Groups of 2-50 employees are ‘community rated’ meaning they are in the same risk pool whether their employees have low or high. Therefore, the small business with healthy employees ends up paying a higher rate because of other businesses who may have employees with expensive high risk chronic health problems.

Offering individual health plans to employees comes with more advantages than just lower price. They also come with less administration. Unlike ‘group” plans, there are no ‘renewals’ each year to go through, no minimum participation requirements imposed by insurance carriers, and no minimum employer contribution requirements, either. Employers still have the ability to define eligibility, probation periods, and can design their health benefit package with more options and flexibility.

The Washington Health Insurance Agency has been providing creative solutions like this to small business owners for years. Give us a call at 360-464-1622 to find out if you’re paying too much for your health insurance coverage or fill out our business quote form for a free cost

7 Tips For Super Health

What is                             real health and how do we get there? Getting down to your target weight, exercising every day, eating a balanced diet – is that health? Here are 7 Super Health tips that I’ve gained from my health journey.

Super Health Tip # 1 – Become Your Own Doctor – Get a 2nd Opinion – Your Own. Three critical facts about today’s doctors. First, they have little, if any, training in nutrition, or how to prevent or cure diseases. Second, they treat your symptoms, not the cause, and third, statistics show that 94% of them get paid for prescribing drugs. 3 good reasons for a 2nd opinion.

Super Health Tip # 2 – Balance is Critical. A stool Has 3 Legs – just one or two and you fall over. What you eat determines 70% of your health. Exercise determines 20% – do something. Your health environment, both internally, the way you think and feel, and externally, your social network, is 10%.

Super Health Tip # 3 – Discover Super Foods. Whole foods provide better nutrition, more energy, and build a stronger immune system. Eat whole grains and seeds in cereals and breads, and wheat germ, bran and brewers yeast. Eat fruits and vegetables and drink green smoothies, fruit smoothies with 2 or 3 green veggies added. I have my green smoothie recipe on my site.

Super Health Tip # 4 – Invest In You. You educate yourself, spend thousands on your home and cars. Invest in your body – for the best results over your lifetime. Take nutrition courses – read some health books. Learn what builds health and what causes degenerative diseases (tip: it’s what you eat). Read The China Study to   Super Health Tip # 5 – Discipline Yourself – No-one Else Can. Become a closet health nut year by year. Don’t broadcast it – live it. Many people care more about their cars than their body – and spend more time planning their vacations than they do caring for the temple they live in. Don’t be one of them. Incorporate what you learn into your lifestyle.

Super Health Tip # 6 – Health is a Journey. Your body is miraculously resilient. You can recover from obesity, alcoholism, drug addiction, and from abusing your body. Your health is always determined by what you do in the previous 3 months of your life. Commit to and become healthier, and live into your  with joy, zest, and bounding energy.

Super Health Tip # 7 – Become a 95% Vegetarian. The evidence is now conclusive. The fat, cholesterol, triglycerides, and carcinogenic protein from meat and dairy products clogs us up, restricts our blood flow, decreases the oxygen to our cells, makes us sluggish, causes high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and cancer. Cut out 95% of meat and dairy. Fruits, vegetables and grains taste heavenly when your tongue isn’t filtering them through layers of fat, grease, salt, and sugar. The sensational Eating DVD documents it all.

Health Care Reform – Let It Come But Be Ready for Change!

To stir                    emotions the health care reform debate doesn’t have to peel the onion back very far. There are those who could always afford health insurance and are worried that their costs will significantly rise in the attempt to cover the cost of care for those who have gone without. There are those with numerous and expensive to treat medical problems, who have no health insurance or inadequate health insurance coverage and they need relief, now! And there are those who are healthy, have chosen not to have health insurance, and resent a mandate requiring them to “buy-in” or face monetary penalties.

The Health Care Affordability Act of 2010 is wide in its scope and goals. First, it moves us to a place where most Americans will be covered by health insurance. This will remove “the” key impediment to “routine” health care services for millions of Americans. Subsidies will insure health care insurance regardless of an ability to pay and just because you have existing medical conditions you will still be eligible for “reasonably priced” coverage. Stated another way, insurers will not be able to reject you or drastically increase your premiums if you suffer from chronic illnesses that generate a high level of claims, nor will they be allowed to set dollar limits on health insurance coverage.

To fund these objectives the Health Care Affordability Act requires all Americans to purchase health insurance. There will be subsidies if you are in a low income category and if you have no ability to pay anything you will be eligible for Medicaid as these state level programs will be more accommodating and act as the ultimate safety net. Through its mandates, the law requires millions of healthy individuals to pay into the system. The idea here is that those of us who are not in need of health care will fund those who draw from it. Since any of us can succumb to a health emergency at any time and thus become in need of potentially costly health care interventions those who support the mandate feel that this is fair – we are simply looking out for each other. Next, there are numerous plans in testing phases that are designed to make the delivery of health care more efficient and more cost effective. These pilot programs are being managed by the for Medicare and Medicaid Services  and include the cooperation of health systems throughout the country. These are complex to say the least and in early development stages and until proven, which is years from now, it is not known what their effect will be.

I support the attempt by the Obama administration and others to get something done on this pressing national issue. But there is a lack of   about the cost, where the funds will come from, what treatments and medical technologies will be restricted due to very high costs and how the demand of millions of newly insured patients will be managed in terms of timely access to care and treatments. I have spent forty-one years of my life in a medical technology career that focused on global health economics and reimbursement issues and believe me, something will have to give. In every country outside of America, health care budgets are limited and capped. Fees to hospitals and physicians are set, annually reviewed and kept in check and new medical technology prices and access to them are restricted in subtle and not so subtle ways. And if you think that these policies won’t happen in America – think again, as spending limits are being set and will be set and we will have to live within them!

Having said that, let’s continue on with the reforms, some government mandated, some driven by the market place as conservative health policies propose. Just know that we will be dealing with health care reform for a very long time and there are going to be a lot of disillusioned folks along the way, newly enfranchised and otherwise. The emerging health care system will be “more just” but it will require real and noticeable sacrifice from the majority of Americans who heretofore never much worried about the fairness of it all.

How to Get Cheap Health Insurance Plan?

The United                     States Government has been presenting several schemes and plans to help the American residents enjoy health insurance benefits to the fullest. “Obamacare” is one such scheme that provides health insurance facilities for both the high-income and low-income groups in America. However, a report from a Washington D.C. firm, named  Health, reveals that the price for one of the plans in Obamacare, called the silver plan, will rise to about 34% in 2018. The silver plan provides a decent coverage policy and is a bit high on the monthly premiums. For those who cannot afford to pay such high premiums; they need not worry, as there are policies besides this and a subsidy scheme, which will provide health insurance at low cost.

While shopping for cheap health insurance plans, one should have sound knowledge about health insurance policies. Senior Vice President of   Services at Manning & Napier, Shelby George advises the shoppers to always look for how much coverage is provided for the costs a company provides. In other words, one should not get carried away by the cheap rates, but should rather focus on how much coverage the insurance companies are providing for those cheap rates they advertise.

In order to get best cheap health insurance, here is an explanation of the different policies available and a description of, whether one can get insurance for “free”.

Subsidies and other Health Insurance Plans:

With an aim to provide all Americans with Health Insurance coverage, one of the many useful plans proposed by the Government, is that of ‘subsidies’. A subsidy, in simple words, is the amount paid by the Government to the insurance companies to provide health insurance facilities to those with low incomes. This means that people falling into the low-income group will be able to enjoy health insurance benefits through the use of subsidies, which would otherwise be rejected by insurance companies on any other short-term policy claim.

An individual who earns about $48,000 and a family of 4, which earns somewhere less than $98,000 are those who can enjoy the benefits of subsidies. Hence, people with low incomes can enjoy good cheap health insurance with the help of subsidies. However, these subsidy schemes proposed by the Obamacare plan are more likely to be altered or eliminated on the whole by the Trump administration.

Talking about other health insurance plans, a silver plan will cover up to 70% of a person’s health care charges while a bronze plan will cover up to 60% of the costs and the remaining percentage of charges will have to be paid out of the person’s pockets. Now, comparing these two plans, if one wishes to spend absolutely NO money out of one’s pockets, then choosing a bronze plan along with a subsidy will be of great help. For those who cannot afford to pay out of one’s own pockets, the bronze plan coverage of 60% along with the remaining 40% covered by subsidies will help to enjoy cheap health insurance.

What Type of Policy One Can Choose?

The first step to get hold of the best cheap health insurance is to be aware of what policy suits one’s needs. Here is a list of two options explained briefly, so that one can choose the best fit.

1. Short-Term Policy: A short-term policy is for those people, who do not qualify to avail subsidies. In other words, people for whom it becomes ‘ ‘ to get health insurance are advised to choose this policy. Here the term ‘ ‘ is described as the cost that exceeds above 8% of an individual or a family’s annual income. According to, Nate   the Vice President of Consumer Affairs  , individuals whose income ranges from $49,000 to $69,000 and families that earn somewhere between $99,000 and $129,000, are supposed to go for short-term policies.

Hence, if one finds it difficult to pay expensive premiums and avail health insurance, then going for the short-term policy is highly recommended. However, there are no penalties if one doesn’t wish to have any health insurance. But, on a positive note, it is beneficial for the individuals themselves, if they have some financial protection that will be of benefit in unfriendly circumstances.

Here are a few noteworthy details about short-term policies:

These policies usually last up to 3 months and can be extended till 9 months (in 3-month period renewal).
According to the new rules proposed by President Trump, having a short-term policy will be mandatory for all individuals. However, this rule has not yet been passed, but will soon be in effect.
These policies do not provide coverage for  -existing illnesses, i.e. diseases that one is suffering from, before applying for the policy.
If at all one wishes to include such  -existing illnesses in the coverage plan, then the premiums will increase substantially.
Unlike Obamacare schemes, short-term policies will not cover charges for maternal care, injuries due to abuse, and mental health treatment.
On having a short-term policy, one can avail decent health care facilities at about $100 premium a month.
On an overall basis, despite the low coverage options it provides, those who are looking for cheap health insurance for individual or cheap health insurance for families, can avail great benefits from this policy.

Family Practice Doctor – Things to Consider in Choosing a Family Physician

When choosing a family          practice physician there are many things to consider. Your first question may be: What does a doctor of this nature do? These physicians can provide services to all members of your household, including children, adolescents and adults. They offer caring relationships by building a rapport with their patients through getting to know them individually and extending their care over a long time-frame. If you desire to work with a physician who will listen to your concerns and help you make the right overall health decisions, this type of physician can meet these needs. They offer comprehensive care for all members of your household regardless of age, sex, or the nature of any illness. By building a partnership with this type of physician, you can insure the future health of yourself and your kin.

Family doctors offer many services under one roof in ways that a specialist cannot. For example, many physicians offer physical, mental, and emotional treatments concurrently. An advantage of employing this type of physician is that you can get health services for a range of different ailments from the same doctor. This type of practice provides the patients and families with extensive services from one source. In addition, working with a single physician on a continuous basis allows your treatment professional to gain an explicit knowledge of your health history, and to note any signs that may arise over extended treatment. In this way, your physician can watch for developing ailments through all stages of your life and provide a comprehensive health care solution.

Family practice doctors also offer more   care for other members of your household. If, for example, your children require specific   care, these physicians can provide this service. In addition, other members of your household may require services such as physicals or . In these ways, doctors provide services that range from routine to more   under the auspices of a single office. Many of these   professionals also offer women’s health services as well as birth control advice and options. Practitioners of medicine for full families also provide the most current treatments and technologies. They work hard to keep up with the current trends and tendencies in the medical field and apply these findings in their individual practices. Many have also trained in real-life settings, offering them the perspective of experienced physicians.

If you are interested in employing a doctor who can provide comprehensive treatment in many different settings, consider a family practice physician. These doctors can provide assistance in the office, in the patient’s home, or in the hospital setting if so required. Many   professionals also continue to pursue certifications and renew their licensing regularly. This can ease the patient’s mind as regards the level of contemporary service the physician provides. These ideas also pertain to continuing education. Physicians work diligently to ensure their patients that their practice remains contemporary and is in touch with the latest medical and scientific breakthroughs in the relevant fields.

You may also ask: Why might I need a family doctor? Employing a physician to keep tabs on all members of your household can have many benefits. First of all, these doctors, through working continually with you and your kin, can provide preventative measures to help you avoid future ailments. By studying your personal and familial history, these doctors can help inform you more fully when making choices about your continuing health. They can also catch problems as they first arise and cut them off before they become bigger health issues.
