Better English Writing – Are You Doing This?

Better English writing requires you to ensure that a number of elements are in good order.  It includes punctuation, spelling, grammar, construction of sentences, flow, logic and a whole lot more. Better English writing is full of challenges. However, if you are prepared to take them on, you will be able to achieve greater success and satisfaction.

For better English writing, you will be able to do well by taking note of the following:

1. Subject-Verb Agreement

It is common to find mistakes between subject and verb. Bear in mind that when you are composing a sentence, your subject and verb must agree. Take note: singular subject, singular verb form. Plural subject, plural verb form. Examples: He sings on stage. They sing on stage

2. Words that Sound the Same

Words that sound the same but have different meanings are often and wrongly used interchangeably. Examples: There and they. Its and  it’s. Knew and new. A dictionary is invaluable in helping when you are uncertain of the meaning and usage of words.

3. Adjectives and Adverbs

Learn the difference between adjectives and adverbs. Adjectives describe nouns, while adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.  Adjectives are not used to describe action words.
