The benefit of practicing yoga is not new. It has been recognized for many years as the ideal discipline to help one achieve calm, better health and a longer life.

Many people see the benefit of yoga as a kind of quirky discipline that includes yogis who take unnatural postures, perform strange body actions, and live on top of a mountain somewhere in India. Personally, I remember a television documentary from several years ago that showed a yogi who cut out his tongue, using it to clean his nasal cavities! Anyone interested in yoga has probably seen photos of the yogi bearing a lot of weight with her genitals as well.

In this modern age, much has been learned about the benefits of yoga. Yoga practitioners achieve greater mobility, a longer life and inner happiness through their practice of the art. Yoga as we know it today aims to unify the mind, body and spirit. The mysticism of the Hindu system is no longer a myth and can be accessed by all those interested in learning.

Yoga practice is roughly divided into three categories: postures (asanas), breathing yoga (pranayama), and meditation. These categories include physiological, psychological and biochemical influences. Furthermore, the doctors compared these results with Western practices of running, aerobic exercise, and weight training, and found comparable results.

The most popular style of yoga in the West today is Hatha yoga. It is designed to focus on the physical well-being of the human being and, in practice, believers see the body as the medium of the soul.

Ananda Yoga, a classic Hatha Yoga technique, uses asana and pranayama to awaken, experience and control the subtle energies within the body and focuses on the energies of the seven chakras.

Anusara Yoga (a-nu-SAR-a) is defined as “entering the stream of divine will”, “following your heart” and “moving with the stream of divine will”. This new technique, developed by John Friend, is known as “Yoga Postures of the Heart”. It is heart oriented, spiritually inspiring, and based on a deep understanding of both external and internal body alignments. It is based on the principles of Hatha Yoga and biochemical practices. Students in this specialty base their practices on attitude, action, and alignment.

Ashtanga yoga can be the perfect yoga for those looking for some serious exercise. Ashtanga was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois and is very physically demanding. A series of flows, moving rapidly from one position to the next, are used to develop strength, flexibility, and endurance. This method is not good for the novice practitioner, as it requires 6 sets of difficulty. Ashtanga’s physical requirements are not for the casual practitioner embarking on his fitness and yoga journey.

Bikram Yoga, named after its founder Bikram Choudhury, is practiced in a room with a temperature of 100 degrees. Twenty-six asanas are performed in a typical session, and the focus is on warming up and stretching the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Each situation is accompanied by a Kapalabhati breath, “breath of fire.” The practice of this technique promotes the cleansing of the body, the release of toxins and maximum flexibility. You have to be in very good physical condition to practice Bikram Yoga.
